I almost laughed out loud at the absurdity of it.
Instead, I asked, “Did you ever actually read the contract you signed before our wedding day?”
A sudden silence fell over the line.
Gavin finally scoffed. “That agreement? My attorney told me it was just standard paperwork.”
In reality, his attorney had strongly advised him to read every page, but Gavin had bragged to his friends that he signed without reading because true marriage is built on trust.
The agreement was far from standard. It clearly established that my inherited property was strictly separate, that no marital claims could ever attach to it, and that any attempt to divert corporate funds would trigger an immediate removal of his management authority.
He had placed his full signature at the bottom of every single page.
On Friday morning, our forensic accountant uncovered even deeper financial misdeeds. Gavin had been paying off Paisley’s personal balance cards directly from our operating revenue, while Bernice’s luxury SUV lease was falsely recorded as heavy equipment transit. Over eighteen months, they had siphoned nearly ninety thousand dollars from the corporate accounts.
Then the accountant revealed the ultimate betrayal. Gavin had prepared a scheduled wire transfer of one hundred and forty thousand dollars to a newly formed entity, timed for the morning right after my scheduled delivery date.
Samuel placed the banking printout onto the table in front of me. “He calculated that you would be isolated in the recovery room.”
My hands trembled slightly as I looked at the official paper. My reaction was not born of fear, but from the sudden clarity of their calculated scheme. They had timed the entire theft around my childbirth because they assumed physical pain would leave me entirely helpless.I drew a long breath and signed the formal authorization for a thorough audit, civil litigation, and Gavin’s immediate removal as manager.
Afterward, I packed up his personal belongings. I did not act out of anger, but worked methodically, going suit by suit and pair by pair. Every luxury watch he purchased while claiming we needed to cut back was logged into an inventory ledger under attorney supervision, as several had been purchased using corporate accounts.
Bernice continued to send demand texts throughout the weekend.
“Remember to clean the upper windows,” her texts read. “Make sure Gavin’s dress shirts are washed and pressed. We will arrive home at four on Sunday.”
At three forty-seven on Sunday afternoon, Samuel’s associate, a retired law officer named Donald, took his position by the front door.
I watched from the second-floor window as their truck pulled up the driveway. Gavin stepped out laughing, while Bernice smiled as she inspected the clean window panes from the driveway.
For six brief seconds, they truly believed they had won.
Gavin inserted his key into the front lock, but the deadbolt would not move.
His confident smile vanished instantly. “What on earth is wrong with this lock?”
Bernice pushed past him and began pounding heavily against the wood. “Open this door right now!”
Donald opened the entrance halfway, blocking the entryway completely.
The cheerful vacation expressions vanished from their faces, replaced by an uncomfortable silence.
Part 3
Gavin glared at the stranger standing in his doorway. “Who the hell are you?”
