Fans have rallied behind Kathy Bates over seemingly photoshopped images of the actress as she attended the 98th Academy Awards over the past weekend.
The 77-year-old star β who has recently flaunted her incredible 100lb weight loss β was radiant in a powder blue gown by Vera Wang as she walked the red carpet.
A designer for the brand, Dean M. Sonnenberg, uploaded a few photos to Instagram and said he had been ‘delighted to have dressed the incomparable Kathy Bates.’
However, Threads user @ginaatinukeknight pointed out in a post that some of the images shared by Sonnenberg appeared to have been edited.
The pictures showed the dress suddenly wrinkle-free, while Bates’ complexion appeared to have been slightly smoothed out.
The official Instagram account for Vera Wang also shared images that appeared to have similar edits. Fans have rallied behind Kathy Bates over seemingly photoshopped images of the actress as she attended the 98th Academy Awards over the past weekend.

The Threads user wrote: ‘this is so disrespectful to Kathy Bates! How you gonna edit this beautiful ladyβ¦.is she not worthy of wearing the dress without having her waist snatched and skin smoothed?’
The social media user also included a GlamBOT reel of the Matlock actress posing on the red carpet.
‘I mean it was very unnecessary,’ the creator of the post added.
Others shared their thoughts in the comment section as one penned, ‘I’m fine with editing the dress wrinkles but don’t edit the person.’
Another wrote, ‘Smoothing the dress is fine. Smoothing the actor is not,’ and a fan simply added, ‘Disgusting behavior.’
‘Ugh, I didn’t even notice that. I hate it. She’s gorgeous and an absolute icon,’ another said, and one shared, ‘I can forgive virtually ironing the dress but the rest of this is trash work.’
One fan wrote, ‘Photoshopping the dress is perfectly normal and fine. Making her more slender and “smoothing” her face is not normal and gross.’
The creator of the post replied, ‘They literally gave her a new neck,’ and the fan added, ‘Exactly, wild and inappropriate.

‘Most actors know their red carpet looks will get shopped a little but I know many of them ask for only touch ups and not makeovers,’ they continued.
One shared, ‘She is gorgeous β the smoothed dress is genuinely creepy. Her unedited photo is stunning.’
The Threads user who uploaded the post responded with, ‘I’d be so offended.’
Bates arrived at the annual star-studded Oscars wearing a light blue gown with a skirt that fell into a short train.
Dazzling embellishments were added around the bodice area, and she carried a silver clutch bag in her hand.
She had completed the look for Hollywood’s biggest night with mini silver earrings as well as a shimmering necklace.
Bates later stepped onto the stage inside the Dolby Theatre during the In Memoriam segment.
The actress had previously worked with the late Rob Reiner on the film Misery (1990), which he directed. Reiner and his wife Michele were tragically murdered in December.
Bates has been keeping busy after taking on the leading role in the CBS legal drama Matlock, which has been renewed for a third season.
The star has also been showing off her incredible weight loss after admitting that she took Ozempic to aid in her journey.
She dropped a total of 80lbs after focusing on a healthier lifestyle beginning in 2017, and lost an additional 20lbs after using the GLP-1 medication.
During an interview with People back in 2024, she expressed, ‘There’s been a lot of talk that I just was able to do this because of Ozempic.
‘But I have to impress upon people out there that this was hard work for me, especially during the pandemic. It’s very hard to say you’ve had enough.’
She was inspired to put her health first after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes back in 2017. ‘I ate because I was afraid, and I ate because it was an FU to my self-esteem.

‘[Diabetes] runs in my family, and I’d seen what my father had gone through. He had had a leg amputation. One of my sisters is dealing with it very seriously, and it terrified me. It scared me straight.’
Bates made changes to her diet and admitted to the outlet that she ‘used to eat terribly.’
The actress also told Variety that she was at her heaviest weight back in 2011 when she was starring in the NBC series, Harry’s Law, and admitted, ‘I had to sit down every moment that I could.
‘It was hard for me to walk. I’m ashamed I let myself get so out of shape, but now I have a tremendous amount of energy.’
In 2003, the star was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and later battled breast cancer after her diagnosis in 2012.
Bates underwent a double mastectomy, but revealed to Extra that she ‘developed a disease called lymphedema after that.’
Lymphedema occurs due to ’tissue swelling caused by an accumulation of protein-rich fluid that’s usually drained through the body’s lymphatic system,’ according to the Mayo Clinic.
